2017-2018 Roni and Idan

Temple Har Zion continues to participate in the URJ’s Israel Engagement Program by embracing and hosting two young Israeli leaders who have chosen to defer their army service for one year to volunteer in the GTA.

For the 2017 -2018 school year, we are pleased to welcome Idan Aharon and Roni Alkalay.  They will spend three days a week at Leo Baeck Day School North, one day a week at URJ Federation, as well as time with BBYO programming and participating in events for the youth movement.

Idan and Roni will be actively involved in THZ, teaching at our school and offering programs for the adult community. Learn from them by attending Shabbat services when the Shin-Shinim offer a D’var Israel, and participating in the Israel Culture Club programs that they will be running on a monthly basis.

Idan is from Eilat. He graduated from Begin High School where he majored in biology and social sciences. He comes from a large family and has an identical twin. Idan was a Diller Teen Fellow and already has a strong connection to the Toronto community.

Roni was born in Jerusalem, but now lives in Bat Yam. She has two older siblings and she is very close to them. Roni’s sister lived in Toronto for one year and helped her to prepare for her stay with us.

She was a guide in the Scouts for three years, working with children aged 9 to 15. Being an animal lover, Roni decided to become a vegetarian six years ago. When Roni was 15, she began working in theatre production and has enjoyed it ever since. She loves to act and enjoys performing in dramatic productions. Roni has been a waitress since she was 14 years old and it is evident that she is eager to work hard and make this experience a great one for all of us!

Both Idan and Roni enjoy bringing Israel to our Temple and to creating unforgettable experiences and strong connections with as many people as possible.

Our Shin-Shinim work diligently and tirelessly to plan engaging programs for our Temple community. Just as they are thrilled to teach us about Israel and share their lives with us, we, too, are honoured to share ours with them. They are often surprised to learn just how much the diaspora cares about their home, and are also often amazed to learn that we consider Israel our home, too!

Check out the weekly e-blasts and monthly Temple newsletters so you can plan to attend as many of their programs as possible.
